A Tony Award winner for the 1951 production of "The Rose Tattoo," Wallach almost made his big screen debut in "From Here to Eternity" when he was offered the role of Angelo Maggio. Wallach finally appeared with Carroll Baker in "Baby Doll" (1956), directed by Elia Kazan. His performance in the potboiler earned him a British Academy Award and a slew of Hollywood film offers.
