Crimes of Passion

In 1992, 17-year-old Amy Fisher shot her lover's wife in the head, severely wounding her. Mary Jo Buttafuoco was married to Amy's 38-year-old lover, Joey Buttafuoco. Fisher had reportedly begun a sexual relationship with Buttafuoco, the owner of a local Long Island, N.Y. auto body shop, after damaging her parents' car. Fisher pleaded guilty to the shooting was sentenced to five-to-15 years in prison. Joey Buttafuoco pleaded guilty to statutory rape and served six months in prison. In 1999, Fisher was released from prison after a judge agreed to a shorter sentence. Mary Jo Buttafuoco, who survived the shooting, forgave Fisher in court. The two had corresponded for several months while Fisher was in prison and Buttafuoco ultimately helped get Fisher's sentence reduced.

Betty Broderick

San Diego socialite Betty Broderick drew national attention for fatally shooting her 44-year-old ex-husband, Daniel Broderick III, and his new wife, 28-year-old Linda Kolkena Broderick, in their bed on Nov. 5, 1989. During her trial, she portrayed herself as the victim of a heartless man who had discarded her for a younger and slimmer woman, and then used his legal skills and clout with the local judiciary to gain unfair advantages in the divorce settlement and child custody hearings. It took two trials to convict her. The first ended in a hung jury. She was ultimately convicted in 1991 of second-degree murder and sentenced to 32 years to life in prison.

Charles Ann

Charles Ann, 26, was arrested in February 2012 for allegedly killing his 25-year-old girlfriend, Aena Hong, by repeatedly running her over with his car in Fort Lee, N.J. Prosecutors say Ann and Hong were involved in a year-long "tumultuous dating relationship." Police say Ann had his passport and a large amount of cash with him when he was arrested and may have been trying to flee the country. Ann pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder charges.

Cynthia Mills

Maryland woman Cynthia Mills, 47, and her married lover, Wendell Mansel, allegedly tried to hire a hit man (who happened to be an undercover cop) to kill the lover's wife, CBS Baltimore reports. Mills surrendered to police in January 2013. She was charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, solicitation of murder, and attempted first-degree murder.

Jodi Arias

Jodi Arias, an aspiring Arizona photographer, is currently on trial in the shooting and stabbing death of her boyfriend, Travis Alexander. Alexander was found dead in a shower in his Mesa, Ariz. home on June 4, 2008. He had been shot in the face, his throat was slit from ear to ear, and he had been stabbed 27 times. Arias originally told police that two people had broken into the house, murdering Alexander and attacking her, but she later changed her story to claim she killed Alexander in self-defense. Prosecutors argue Arias acted out of jealousy when the 30-year-old Alexander after he tried to end their relationship. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

Kelly Custis

Kelly Custis is accused of breaking into her ex-fiance's Deltona, Fla. home on Feb. 4, 2013 and attacking him - and his new girlfriend - while they were in bed, CBS affiliate WKMG reports. The 27-year-old Custis was arrested on charges of burglary with assault/battery. Custis and her ex had reportedly broken up in August 2012 and she no longer lived at the home or had any belongings there.

Lisa Nowak

Former astronaut Lisa Nowak, 49, was accused of confronting Air Force captain Colleen Shipman in the parking lot of the Orlando International Airport and spraying pepper spray into her car in February 2007. Shipman had begun dating Nowak's love interest, former space shuttle pilot Bill Oefelein. The story made news because Nowak had reportedly driven straight from Houston to Orlando, and police say they found adult diapers in her car. Nowak denied wearing the diapers during the drive. Nowak was sentenced to a year of probation in 2009 after pleading guilty to burglary charges. She was dismissed from NASA after the incident.

Lorena Bobbitt

In 1993, 25-year-old Virginia woman Lorena Bobbitt cut off her husband's penis after he had allegedly raped her. Bobbitt was tried for malicious wounding and a jury found her not guilty by reason of temporary insanity. Her husband, John Wayne Bobbitt, was subsequently tried for rape and also acquitted. The case brought attention to the issues of spousal rape and domestic violence. Lorena and John Wayne Bobbitt divorced in 1995 after six years of marriage.

Michelle Gaiser

In 2010, Michelle Gaiser, 39, was accused of orchestrating at least three failed attempts to kill the wife of her former lover, Houston attorney Jeffrey Stern. Gaiser had accused Jeffrey Stern of being the mastermind behind the murder-for-hire plot, but prosecutors dropped the two counts of soliciting capital murder that Jeffrey Stern faced, saying they did not have sufficient evidence to go to trial. Yvonne Stern said during the trial that she forgave her husband for his infidelity and that they had become victims of a "fatal attraction" situation. In July 2012, Gaiser was sentenced to 20 years in prison as part of a plea agreement.

Renato Seabra

Renato Seabra, a 23-year-old Portuguese model, was accused of killing and castrating his lover, Carlos Castro, a 65-year-old Portuguese TV personality, in a New York City hotel room in January 2011. Prosecutors argued that the two were a couple and that Seabra was angry Castro had ended their relationship. The defense said Seabra was mentally ill. A jury found Seabra guilty and he was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison.

Sahel Kazemi

Police say Sahel Kazemi, the 20-year-old mistess of NFL star Steve McNair, shot him four times on July 4, 2009 while he slept. Kazemi then reportedly positioned herself next to McNair's dead body so that when she put a bullet through her own brain, she would crumple onto his lap. Kazemi was reportedly distraught about mounting financial problems and her belief that McNair was seeing someone else. McNair was married to Mechelle McNair at the time of his murder. The couple had four children together and Mechelle was reportedly unaware of her husband's affair with Kazemi.

Stephanie Lazarus

Stephanie Lazarus, a former Los Angeles police detective, was convicted in March 2012 of murdering her ex-lover's wife, Sherri Rasmussen, in 1986. Rasmussen was bludgeoned and shot to death in the condo she shared with her husband of three months, John Ruetten. During the trial, prosecutors claimed Lazarus was consumed with jealousy when her former lover, Ruetten, decided to marry Rasmussen. Lazarus was not a suspect in 1986 because detectives believed two robbers, who had attacked another woman in the area, were to blame for Rasmussen's death. The case was cold until May 2009 when undercover officers followed Lazarus and obtained a sample of her saliva to compare with DNA left at the original crime scene, police said at the time. In 2012, Lazarus was sentenced to 27 years to life in prison for first-degree murder and an additional two years for personal use of a firearm. Lazarus' defense team said they would appeal the conviction.
