Police said accused murderer Israel Keyes was found dead in his Alaska jail cell on Dec. 2, 2012 in an apparent suicide. Keyes was charged in the death of 18-year-old Samantha Koenig, a barista who was abducted from a coffee kiosk on February 2012. He was later arrested in Texas after using the victim's debit card. Authorities said Keyes was also linked to at least seven other possible slayings in three other states.
This undated handout photo provided by the Anchorage Police Department shows 34-year-old Israel Keyes. Anchorage police say Keyes was arrested on March 13, 2012 in Lufkin, Texas, on charges connected to the disappearance of an 18-year-old barista in February 2012, but that details in a sealed arrest warrant would not be immediately released. Police said Keyes was found dead in his Alaska jail cell on Dec. 2, 2012 in an apparent suicide.
Anchorage Police Chief Mark Mew said that investigators believe Koenig was killed within hours of her Feb. 1, 2012 abduction.
Samantha Koenig was working at Common Grounds Espresso when she was last seen at 8 p.m. on Feb. 1, 2012. Authorities say her shift ended at that time, but she was not there when her boyfriend came to pick her up.
The Anchorage Daily News reports surveillance video captured a man wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt somehow getting into the coffee stand, police say. He appeared to be armed and it seemed he forced Koenig to leave with him on foot, heading east.
Detectives were working leads on Feb. 5, 2012, but police lost valuable time early on. The coffee stand reported Koenig as missing around noon the day after she was last seen. By the time police suspected an abduction, snow had covered up tracks and scents.
