The Boardwalk
In order to ensure public access to the beach, the city obtained the title to the property along the beachfront and began the boardwalk's construction in 1921. It required 3.6 million feet of timber and 120,000 tons of stone. "Coney Island's Fifth Avenue" opened on May 15, 1923.
