China's ghost festival
In the Chinese tradition, the seventh month of the lunar year is regarded as "Ghost Month" in which spirits and ghosts come down to earth. During this festival devotees burn paper models to appease the wandering spirits and offers prayers.
Paper houses are burnt at sea to retrieve ghosts and lonely spirits from the underworld through waterways leading back to the land.
On the 14th day of the 7th lunar month, it is believed that the gates of the underworld are opened for the spirits of the departed to come back to the land for a month-long period of universal salvation in the land of the living.
