The Panama Canal was a miracle of modern engineering when it was built. Now it's going through a multi-billion dollar makeover, one of the largest construction projects the world has ever seen.

CBS's Jake Barlow captured these views of the canal under construction during a recent shoot for CBS This Morning.

The Panama Canal opened in 1914, creating a link between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

The massive expansion project will include dredging miles of the ocean floor. A four-mile bypass channel is also being built, that will include a locking system to raise and lower the largest ships on the planet.
