Behind-the-scenes on a 60 Minutes safari

60 Minutes cameraman Don Lee takes viewers behind the scenes on a story about wildlife filmmakers in Africa.

"For a cameraman, hanging out with Dereck and Beverly Joubert is the equivalent of a writer hanging out with Hemingway or Philip Roth. These are world-class photographers. It was a great learning environment for the 60 Minutes crew."

"This is how Beverly and Dereck work. They do this from sun up to sun down. It's their standard way to observe: cameras are down, Beverly's up spotting, and Dereck's behind the wheel. You can see that he's got his hand on something -- that's like a snorkle, and as long as the water doesn't go inside that tube, they can keep on cruising. These trucks are made to drive in the water. It's just amazing."

"This is a shot of me by 60 Minutes cameraman Chris Albert. You can see how our cameras are rigged to shoot from the trucks. Dereck rigged it up, so that we could shoot the 60 Minutes story the way he shoots his films."

"I was hoping for a hippo here, but all I got was lily pads. The camera is on a slider which is like a mini-dolly-- it just creates some movement in your shot. Why is my tripod in the water? Because I didn't want to go in the water-- there are crocodiles in that water."

"This was shot by Lara. No, it's not usual for a correspondent to pick up your camera and start shooting, but she's not the usual correspondent."

"Lara was having a great time. I thought she was really in her element on this trip. Botswana's just north of South Africa where she grew up, so it wasn't an alien place for her, like it was to us. She was very comfortable and just loving every second of it. I'm in the background, shading the camera."

"This is Max McClellan, the 60 Minutes producer. I put "director" on the back of his chair just to have some fun, but he's actually a very mellow guy to work with."

"We'd just been having lunch on the other side of this tree, and when we circled back, this lion had been sitting there the whole time. I was only about 10 feet from him when I took this, and he could have pulled me out with one finger nail, but the trick is being in a truck. The lions don't think of you as prey if you're in the truck."

"In front of Beverly, you can see something that looks like a fishing rod. That's the tripod mount on the truck. There's one on the driver's side, too. These trucks are rigged to shoot. You don't get out and wander around in this environment. You stay in the truck and the truck becomes the tripod."

"This elephant is trumpeting his ears at me, and it's loud. He's stamping his feet, as if to say, 'Go away!' It was scary. It's a mama, and her baby is behind her."

"Here's Chris Albert at work. These are crocodile infested waters, so Chris was definitely stepping back to the truck in a hurry once he got the shot. No one ever accused 60 Minutes cameramen of being real smart. It's just part of the deal -- it's what we do."

"These lions were hunting, and they're walking right by Chris in the truck, almost like they don't see him. His profile doesn't concern them because he's in the truck. That's how Beverly and Dereck explained it to us."

"This is Lara, Beverly, and Dereck at sunset. I shot this on foot, but we always asked Dereck first, 'Is it OK to dismount the truck?' We'd never go more than five feet away from the trucks. Some of that was courtesy, to show Dereck and Beverly we were obeying their rules of the shoot. Mostly, it was because of the lions."
