Art created by artificial intelligence
For years, the common wisdom about robots was that they're taking over repetitive, routine jobs, but at least they're not creative – we'll always have art and music to ourselves, right? Wrong.
Artificial intelligence, or AI, has also been programmed to recognize elements of art created by humans and then to create its own.

Professor Ahmed Elgammal, of the Art and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J., has spent five years teaching his artificial intelligence program to create original artwork.

Elgammal fed the software 80,000 pieces of art from the last 500 years. After pressing the Enter key, the software creates new, original works.

"The machine just takes the images and it tries to learn, by itself, what makes good art," Elgammal told David Pogue of CBS' "Sunday Morning."

David Pogue asked, "So, who is the artist of one of these paintings? Is it the programmers? Is it the software?"
"I think both," professor Elgammal replied. "I consider myself the artist in setting up the framework. The machine itself explored the possibilities and gives me answers. So, the machine has a part of the creative process."
