Alisa Mathewson's 55 hours of terror
Evidence photos depict the Florida mother's ordeal after her estranged husband snuck into her home and proceeded to hold her against her will.
In the early hours of March 11, 2017, Alisa Mathewson was asleep at her home in Valrico, Florida. Two of her five children, 7-year-old Bryn, and 5-year-old Grady were sleeping next to her in bed.
An unwelcome visitor
Alisa's estranged husband Trevor Summers — who was ordered by a court to stay away from her — climbed into her home through an open window. He had enlisted their 14-year-old daughter Arden to leave that window open for him by telling Arden he was going to talk to Alisa about reconciling.
Suddenly awoken
Once Trevor got inside Alisa's home, he startled Alisa awake by dripping water on her head. Alisa says Bryn and Grady woke up screaming as Trevor dragged her into the living room.
Alisa's scarves
Alisa says Trevor then used various objects to tie her up, including some of her own scarves.
Christmas lights
Trevor also used these Christmas lights to constrain Alisa for hours. Meanwhile Arden and her 12-year-old brother Landon were waiting in Trevor's minivan down the street. They thought their parents would leave the house with Bryn and Grady and they would all drive back to Trevor's home together.
A cautious drive
At around 5 a.m., Trevor instructed Arden to come inside Alisa's house and get her younger siblings. He then told Arden to drive the children back to his house in his minivan. Arden's only driving experience had been in a parking lot.
The children made it back to Trevor's house safely, where their 3-year-old brother Cooper had been left home alone, sleeping. Meanwhile Alisa's ordeal continued.
The pillow
Over the course of the day, Alisa says Trevor turned her into a hostage in her own home, keeping her mostly tied up and sexually assaulting her.
At one point, Alisa says, Trevor used this pillow to try to suffocate her and she blacked out — waking minutes later to him removing the pillow.
A strange confession
While at Alisa's house, Trevor recorded two videos on Alisa's cell phone. Alisa says he told her they were for her to later give to police to prove he had been in her home.
Leaving Alisa's house
That evening, Alisa says Trevor loaded her in her own SUV, with her hands tied, and he drove to a Walgreens.
Drug store stop
Trevor pulled into this Walgreens to buy cold medicine, which Alisa says he had been using to keep her drowsy throughout the day. When Trevor went inside, Alisa says she managed to open the SUV's door, ran out into the parking lot and screamed for help.
Trevor quickly came out of the store, put Alisa back in the car and drove away. But a Walgreens employee saw Alisa in the parking lot and called 911. He gave authorities the SUV's license plate number, and they began a statewide search for the couple.
Alisa's wrist
Trevor drove through the night. At one point, Alisa says Trevor stopped and cut her wrist with a blade. "He said, 'that's for getting out of the car at the Walgreens.'"
Hiding out
Thinking authorities might now be looking for them, Trevor drove down the Tampa Bay coast for hours, eventually parking in a desolated area. There, Alisa says Trevor sexually assaulted her again.
They remained there until early in the morning of Monday, March 13, 2017.
A second attempt
Trevor Summers then drove Alisa to a resort area called Little Harbor, and pulled up behind this dumpster. Alisa says Trevor climbed into the back of the SUV and tried to strangle her with a rope.
"48 Hour"s correspondent Peter Van Sant asked Alisa, "Is there any doubt in your mind what he's attempting to do at that moment?" "No," replied Alisa. "He is killing me behind a dumpster."
But Trevor abruptly stopped. Believing he'd been spotted, Alisa says Trevor quickly jumped into the driver's seat and rode off.
Finding Alisa
Trevor pulled into this private carport in Little Harbor. "He pulls out the razor blade and he starts slitting his throat," said Alisa.
Right in that moment, Alisa remembers authorities surrounding the vehicle, guns drawn, screaming. An officer pulled her out of the SUV, putting an end to her 55 hours of terror.
Rescued
Alisa still had rope around her arms when she was rescued and spoke with law enforcement.
Trevor Summers arrested
Trevor Summers was arrested and later charged with 11 counts, including attempted murder, kidnapping, sexual battery, and child neglect.
