The daughter of a biochemist and a nursing instructor, Oscar winner Nicole Kidman dropped out of school in Australia to pursue acting full time. Seen here at the Oscars on Feb. 27, 2011, Kidman worked on stage before breaking into movies at age 16.

Sir Michael Caine, an Oscar-winning actor, was born Maurice Micklewhite to working-class parents in London. He dropped out of school at 15 to go to work full-time. He didn't start acting until he returned to England from the Korean War.

Singer and Oscar-winning actress Cher was hampered in her studies by severe dyslexa and dropped out of school when she was 15. Here, she sings the national anthem at the start of Super Bowl XXXIII in Miami.

Actor, singer and rancher Rusell Crowe was a child TV star in his native Australia and dropped out of school to pursue his show business ambitions.

The writer and director of such films as "Reservoir Dogs" and "Pulp Fiction" dropped out of high school to pursue filmmaking in spite of having a reported IQ of 160.

Tarantino often describes his "Kill Bill" star Uma Thurman as his muse and like, Tarantino, Thurman never finished high school. The Boston-born daughter of a Buddhist scholar and a European model left boarding school at 15 to pursue acting full-time.

Former "Two and a Half Men" star Charlie Sheen was a baseball star at Santa Monica (Calif.) High School but he was expelled a few days short of graduation for poor attendance and bad grades.

British actor Rupert Everett("My Best Friend's Wedding" and "An Ideal Husband") had an exclusive upbringing at some of the best public schools in the country, but he dropped out at 16 to follow his interest in the theater.

Austraian actress Toni Collette, who has won numerous awards for her work on Showtime's "United States of Tara," left school at 16 to enroll in the National Institute of Dramatic Arts.

Whoopi Goldberg, The View, 4x3 — ABC/The View

Actress and TV personality Whoopi Goldberg was born Caryn Elaine Johnson in New York. She dropped out of school at 16 during a troubled youth that included a series of dead-end jobs, multiple marriages and a drug addiction.

Actress Rene Russo, pictired at the Directors Guild of America Awards Jan. 26, 2008, in Los Angeles, was raised by a struggling single mother and was Ron Howard's classmate at a Burbank (Calif.) high school. She left school in 10th grade to earn a living in a series of low-paying jobs.

"Fockers" actress Teri Polo, pictured at a premiere on Dec. 16, 2004, in Los Angeles, grew up in Delaware where she studied ballet as a child. She left school after she won a modeling contest sponsored by Seventeen magazine.

She quit school at 16 to work as a pin-up-girl and was married within two years. At 19, she found acting success as a regular on "General Hospital."

Jennifer Jason Leigh, pictured at a 2007 awards gala in New York, dropped out of Pacific Palisades High School just before her graduation so she could take on her breakthrough role in 1981's "Eyes of a Stranger."
