10 priciest state universities for out-of-state students

Clemson University is the 10th most expensive public university for nonresidents in the nation. Clemson costs $26,626 for South Carolina residents, but a stiff $42,784 for the 35 percent of undergraduates who hail from elsewhere.

No. 9: Penn State University

Coming in at No. 9, Penn State University in University Park costs $31,002 for residents of the Keystone State and $43,084 for nonresidents. Thirty percent of the students are not from Pennsylvania.

No. 8: Miami University

Miami University, a public institution in Oxford, Ohio, charges $30,536 for Ohioans, but $45,708 for everybody else. Thirty percent of students are nonresidents.

No. 7: University of Vermont

Sixty-seven percent of students attending the University of Vermont in Burlington come from other states or overseas. Outsiders pay $47,198, compared to $27,558 for residents of this small state.

No. 6: University of Texas

University of Texas in Austin, which is the Lone Star state's premier state university, costs $24,714 for residents and $47,426 for outsiders. Ninety-five percent of students attending UT Austin are Texans.

No. 5: College of William and Mary

At this historic campus in Williamsburg, Va., residents pay $24,974, while other students cough up $47,804. Thirty-two percent of the student body are not Virginia residents.

No. 4: University of Colorado

This flagship party school offers the extra attraction of the scenic Rocky Mountains. The sticker price for residents is $27,236, versus $48,414 for nonresidents, who represent 37 percent of the student body.

No. 3: University of Virginia

The University of Virginia in Charlottesville is another popular school with out-of-staters. The in-state cost is $23,986, versus $48,980 for everybody else. Twenty-seven percent of the student body are not Virginians.

No. 2: University of Michigan

The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, which is on many teenagers' college dream lists, costs Michigan residents $25,204, but a whopping $50,352 for outsiders. Thirty-four percent of students at U. of Michigan are not residents.

No. 1: University of California

The nine University of California campuses, including UC Berkeley and UCLA, are the most expensive public universities in the country for nonresidents. The prices range from $52,303 to $55,893. For Californians, the campuses charge from $29,425 to $33,015. Seven percent of UCLA students and 11 percent of Berkeley students come from out of state.
