Governor Orders Confederate Flag Removed From Capitol Display

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) -- Governor Wolf has ordered the removal of a Confederate flag that was part of a display of several dozen flags set up in the state capitol.

Debra Markle of the Hanover Area Historical Society says the Confederate flag was one of 50 replica flags representing eras of American history on display in the state capitol's east wing rotunda.

"We figured it was just as an important part of history as the Vikings during the exploration… during the Colonial times, the Revolution."

Philadelphia Representative Vanessa Lowery Brown, chair of the Legislative Black Caucus, was the first to take the flag down. Brown says the display did not tell the full story of the Confederate flag.

"The information underneath the flag did not properly say that this was a symbol of hatred, murder and oppression."

Echoing those sentiments, a spokesman says Governor Wolf does not believe the flag should be in a state building and ordered it removed from the display.
