A former JetBlue Airways pilot who scared passengers by yelling about Jesus and al Qaeda in 2012 has sued the airline for $16 million, claiming that it jeopardized the flight by failing to recognize he was ill.
Clayton Osbon was released more than seven months after a March flight during which passengers said the 49-year-old pilot left the cockpit and ran through the cabin yelling about Jesus and al Qaeda.
They are now among 34 passengers who claim they feared for their lives when a pilot had to be restrained in the cabin while ranting wildly during the March Las Vegas-bound flight.
A Texas judge said the 49-year-old suffered a severe mental disease or defect that impaired his ability.
On Monday, American Eagle flight attendant Jose Serrano apparently couldn't take the heat as passengers became impatient on their weather-delayed flight to Raleigh-Durham, N.C.
The lawsuit was filed Wednesday in state Supreme Court in Queens. It contends the airline should have known that Clayton Osbon was unfit to fly.
The JetBlue pilot who had a meltdown in mid-air has been indicted. Clayton Osbon was indicted on one count of interference with a flight crew.
A judge wants to know if Clayton Osbon is mentally fit to stand trial. The motion seeking the psychiatric exam states that events enumerated in a FBI affidavit "establish a likelihood that Osbon may be suffering from a mental disease or defect.''
Clayton Osbon didn't speak as he stood before the judge other than to say he understood the charges against him. He was not asked to enter a plea during the hearing.
"We know you were placed in an awful situation and we appreciate your ability to respond professionally," wrote Connye Osbon.
