Landmark Bronx Bakery Forced To Close Doors After Lease Issues
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A landmark bakery in the Bronx is closing its doors after more than 50 years.
Zaro's Bakery, which opened the doors to its Parkchester location in 1959, will close on Monday.
As CBS2's Ilana Gold reported, the owner informed customers the bakery would be closing after the property's landlord said the location's lease would not be renewed.
"When I found out they're were going to end the lease I said how can they to do this?" Ken Sanoguet, of Parkchester, said.
A spokesperson for Olshan Properties, who is involved with the property, did not immediately return requests for comment, CBS2 reported.
Devoted customers started lining up at Zaro's early Sunday morning, to get some of the bakery's staple items -- like their famous challah bread and black-and-white cookies -- one last time.
For some neighborhood locals, going to Zaro's is a decades-old Sunday tradition.
"Where I'm going to get my coffee where am I going to get my Zaro's, my bakery goods?" Sanoguet said.
Zaro's bakery has 10 other locations in Manhattan and New Jersey, which will remain open. The owner said he's trying to find another sport in Parkchester.
"It will not be the same," Desi K. Robinson, who grew up in the Bronx, said. "It will not be the same."
The bakery will open on Monday at 5 a.m. for its final day of sales.
