Yonkers Woman Gets New Wheelchair Ramp Thanks To Mayor Spano
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A wheelchair-bound Yonkers woman who had her wheelchair ramp stolen last week is free to leave her home once more.
As CBS 2's Alice Gainer reported Monday, Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano teamed up with local businesses to donate a new ramp to 71-year-old Cynthia Knox after the $1,000 ramp her daughter bought was stolen.
Knox's daughter, Cathy, said she didn't understand how the thieves could be so cruel. "How could you be so heartless. Who would even want to steal a wheelchair ramp. You don't think about the person who wants to use it?"
Knox said that while she had no ramp, she had no way of getting in and out of her home unless it was for her dialysis appointments.
"The ambulette driver gets me up and down stairs but they're trained to do that. My kids can't do it, so I have to stay in unless I'm going to dialysis," Knox said.
On Monday her home was outfitted with a donated ramp from Alpha Care Supply and National Ramp, Gainer reported.
Knox said she was touched by the work Mayor Spano's team had done for her. "I'd like to thank him for everything that he's done and his office, all his entourage," Knox said.
Mayor Spano said although Yonkers can be a tough town, it can also be a compassionate town.
