Yankees' Twitter Account Gives A-Rod No Love For Homer
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The New York Yankees insist there's nothing behind the curious omission of Alex Rodriguez's first home run since 2013 on their Twitter page.
On Wednesday, tweeters were treated to real-time details of New York's spring training exhibition against Boston, including Jacoby Ellsbury coming up to bat and prospect Slade Heathcott hitting a two-run blast.
There was no mention of A-Rod's fourth-inning homer, his first long ball since coming off a yearlong drug suspension. And fans took notice.
The team told the New York Daily News that it "was very much an unintended error." A Yankees spokesman added to NJ.com: "Alex is and will be treated like every other Yankees player. The error will be addressed."
According to the Daily News, Rodriguez has only appeared in Yankees tweets that announce the starting lineups. The disgraced slugger's first hit in his first at-bat on March 4 also went ignored on social media.
The team's Twitter account is managed by MLB Advanced Media (MLBAM) and the Yankees have given its handlers "no directive" to overlook A-Rod, the Daily News reported.
The 39-year-old has apologized to the club, league and fans for his role in baseball's Biogenesis-PED scandal of 2013. His fight of the season-long ban included lawsuits against the Yankees, MLB and players' union, all of which were dropped in Feb. 2014.
Rodriguez went 1 for 2 on Wednesday to raise his spring average to .455 (5 for 11). The Yankees lost 10-6.
