Yankees Lock Up First-Round Pick Ty Hensley
NEW YORK (WFAN) -- Yankees first-round pick Ty Hensley said last month he'd sign with New York instead of going on to play college baseball at Mississippi.
Well, Hensley just took his first step to one day donning pinstripes. The 18-year-old hurler has agreed to a deal with the Yankees, the team officially announced Friday.
The right-hander couldn't wait to share the news Thursday night on Twitter.
"Hey everyone I have some news," he wrote in a series of tweets. "As the captain says... 'Everything looks good in pinstripes!!!!' "
He added: "Thank you so much everyone I can't wait to get my career started!!! #nowtherealworkbegins."
The Yankees selected Hensley, who starred for Edmond Santa Fe High School in Oklahoma, with the 30th overall pick in this year's MLB amateur draft.
The talented pitcher is confident he can execute a quick climb to the major leagues. Named the 2012 Gatorade Oklahoma Player of the Year, Hensley "is said to top out at 94 mph, with his best pitch being a power curveball," according to the Yankees' official website.
"My goal is definitely to be there by the time I'm 21 years old, which would have been my junior year in college," Hensley said during a conference call in June. "I think it's realistic. I know I have a long ways to go, but I'm definitely not going to stop working until I get there and after that."
He reiterated that point to his followers on Twitter: "I'm going to be a New York Yankee... See you ASAP New York can't wait to get there!!!!"
Hensley, an imposing figure at 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds, recorded a whopping 111 strikeouts over 55.1 innings in 2012. He went 10-0 in 11 games with a 1.52 ERA.
