Yankees Sign Ex-Mets Pitcher John Maine To Minor-League Deal
NEW YORK (WFAN) -- The Yankees have signed right-hander John Maine to a minor-league deal, WFAN and CBSSports.com baseball insider Jon Heyman reported Friday.
The former Mets starter was released by the Boston Red Sox organization, who eyed him as a potential reliever, earlier this month.
Well known among New York fans, Maine hasn't pitched in the majors since shoulder surgery derailed his career in 2010.
Acquired prior to the 2006 season from the Baltimore Orioles for Kris Benson, Maine was a solid contributor for then-Mets manager Willie Randolph and former pitching coach Rick Peterson.
Maine provided a boost to the NL East-champion 2006 team, and pitched to a 2.63 ERA over three starts during the postseason. His best year arguably came in 2007, when he went 15-10 with a 3.91 ERA over 191 innings pitched.
The oft-injured starter's ERA steadily increased as his appearances decreased from 2008-10. He went 1-3 with a 6.13 ERA for the Mets in 2010 before the shoulder injury ended his season.
The 31-year-old went 1-3 with a 7.43 ERA over 11 starts last season for the Colorado Rockies' Triple-A affiliate.
