Yankees Send Down Yangervis Solarte, Call Up Zelous Wheeler
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The ice-cold Yankees have sent infielder Yangervis Solarte down to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Infielder Zelous Wheeler has been signed and selected to the 25-man roster, and shortstop Dean Anna has been designated for assignment.
The 26-year-old Solarte got off to a scorching start in his rookie season, but he has cooled off significantly. Playing mostly third base -- he's also seen time at shortstop and second base -- the Venezuelan is batting .260 with six homers and 30 RBIs.
In 66 games Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Wheeler hit .299 with seven homers and 31 RBIs. The 27-year-old also posted a .367 on-base percentage and smacked 20 doubles.
Anna appeared in just 12 games for the Bombers in 2014. He went 3-for-22 with a homer and three RBIs, striking out six times.
Heading into Thursday night's series opener against the Twins in Minnesota, the Yankees are 41-42 and 4 1/2 games behind the first-place Blue Jays in the American League East.
New York has lost five straight games and plays its next 11 contests away from Yankee Stadium leading into the All-Star break.
