Yankees' Robinson Cano Denies Being Linked To Biogenesis
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano denied any involvement with a South Florida clinic under investigation by Major League Baseball after a report linked an associate of his to the facility.
ESPN reported Monday that Sonia Cruz, the spokeswoman for Cano's foundation, is listed as having been a client of Biogenesis of America LLC, a now-closed anti-aging clinic in Coral Gables. She told ESPN she did not receive anything from the clinic and said Cano never did, either.
Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez is among the big leaguers linked to clinic. The Miami New Times reported in January it had obtained files showing Rodriguez bought banned substances from the facility. Rodriguez's spokesman has denied the allegations in the New Times report.
Before Monday night's game at Tampa Bay, Cano said he does not feel there is a need to contact Cruz.
"It has nothing to do with me," Cano said. "I'm just going to keep playing my game."
Cano said he had not seen the report.
"I didn't see what the story said but I have no comment," Cano said. "I'm just going to focus on the game and help this team to win games."
Cano isn't being investigated by MLB or the players' association, according to the New York Daily News.
The Daily News, citing sources, reported Cano "does not appear to be linked to the clinic" and "his name does not appear on MLB's list of players who allegedly obtained performance-enhancing drugs" from Biogenesis.
Cruz told ESPN that Cano "definitely never" received anything from the clinic.
"I met with a nurse who works for the clinic, but I met her outside the clinic just to talk to her about a diet program they have for women," Cruz told ESPN. "I never went through with it once she explained what it was. I thought it was just a diet/nutritional thing, but it was diet, nutrition, pills and stuff."
