Yankees Reportedly Have 'No Interest' In Trade For Cliff Lee
NEW YORK (WFAN) -- Yankees general manager Brian Cashman doesn't expect to make any big splashes before Tuesday's 4 p.m. trade deadline.
Apparently that includes Philadelphia starter Cliff Lee.
The Phillies have reportedly put Lee in play on the trade market. Just don't expect New York, who made a push for the three-time All-Star before the trade deadline in 2010 and later that year in free agency, to make a third attempt at him.
"We have no interest," a Yankees official told the New York Daily News. "We have a good team, we're in first place and our starting pitching is excellent."
Lee is just 1-6 with a 3.95 ERA in 17 starts this year for the disappointing Phillies. He's in the second year of a five-year, $120 million deal with the club.
Cashman said before Monday night's loss that he doesn't expect to pull the trigger on any trades.
"Nope, not at all," he said. "It's possible, but I highly doubt it."
But that was before Mark Teixeira suffered an injury to his left wrist. X-Rays were negative and the first baseman is expected to have an MRI Tuesday.
Some major contributors are expected to rejoin New York for its stretch run. Reliever Joba Chamberlain is on the cusp of completing his comeback from Tommy John surgery and a freak ankle injury. Alex Rodriguez and Andy Pettitte are slated to return in September.
And for the suddenly cost-conscious Yankees, that may be enough of a boost.
"I'm not going to count anything out," said Cashman. "But (there are) a lot of buyers, not very many sellers. It just feels like it's gotten quiet."
