Yankees' Rafael Soriano Expected To Remain Closer When David Robertson Returns
NEW YORK (WFAN) - Right-hander Rafael Soriano is expected to stay the Yankees' closer when reliever David Robertson makes his return to the mound, CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman reported.
Robertson -- who the Bronx Bombers still see as their closer of the future -- will be out of action until at least mid-June.
Since taking over for Robertson when he strained a muscle in his ribcage, the Yanks' third-option closer has been terrific for New York, going six-for-six in save opportunities. Over that span, the 32-year-old Dominican Republic native has lowered his season ERA to a stellar 1.96.
When Robertson does return, he will likely be thrown into the eighth-inning setup role, where he has previously dominated holding leads for injured closer Mariano Rivera.
30-year-old reliever David Aardsma, who the Yankees signed in February after he underwent Tommy John surgery and missed all of the 2011 season, hopes to join the team's bullpen in late July. The right-hander saved 69 games in 2009-'10 for the Mariners.
