Yankees Pick High-School Hurler Ty Hensley 30th Overall In MLB Draft
NEW YORK (WFAN) -- The Yankees drafted surefire Hall of Famer Derek Jeter 20 years ago last Friday. On Monday, New York used their top pick on a young hurler who they think has the potential to become a star in the Bronx.
The Yankees selected Ty Hensley, a right-handed high-school pitcher out of Oklahoma, with the 30th overall pick in this year's MLB amateur draft.
"We're excited to get a guy with such a high ceiling," vice president of amateur scouting Damon Oppenheimer said Monday, according to the team's official website. "He has the ideal body for a high school pitcher, as well as power stuff, and has the ability to be a high-end starter. He's demonstrated a quality makeup and has shown himself to be a hard worker, which makes him a quality pick for us."
The 18-year-old Hensley, an imposing figure at 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds, recorded a whopping 111 strikeouts in 55.1 innings in 2012. He went 10-0 over 11 games with a 1.52 ERA.
Named the Oklahoma Player of the Year, Hensley "is said to top out at 94 mph, with his best pitch being a power curveball," according to the Yankees' website.
If the youngster can live up to his baseball idols, Yankees fans will certainly be in for a treat.
"I model my game after Roger Clemens, my mechanics," Hensley told the MLB Network. "But I try to be like Roy Halladay by being efficient."
