Yankees' Nick Swisher Reportedly Eyeing Jayson Werth-Like Deal This Offseason
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Yankees right fielder Nick Swisher loves playing for the Yankees, but it may take a good chunk of change for him to return to the Bronx in 2013.
Swisher is a free agent at the end of the season, and multiple reports have suggested that he is seeking a Jayson Werth-like deal -- in other words, $126 million over seven years.
Werth signed a mega-deal with the Washington Nationals in December of 2010 following a career year in Philadelphia, and his contract was heavily criticized almost as soon as he signed the dotted line. As many predicted, the Nationals didn't get a quality return on investment -- at least to this point -- as Werth has been hampered by injuries and has generally struggled since his arrival in the nation's capital.
Swisher is putting up solid numbers in 2012, and his final line could be attractive to teams looking for a power-hitting switch hitter.
The 31-year-old is currently hitting .268 with 18 home runs and 69 RBIs with 38 games left to play.
Though the affable veteran will unquestionably test the market come November, he's made it clear that he'd love to stay in New York.
"Everyone knows how much I love New York," Swisher told CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman. "I've been very vocal about that. This place has been so amazing for me. I'm enjoying my situation and I'm enjoying my teammates. I'm not going to have any regrets. I'm going to live it up and I'm going to have a blast.''
Swisher, who was traded to the Yankees in 2008, has reportedly not had any discussions with the front office about a potential contract extension.
