Yankees Manager Joe Girardi Resting Derek Jeter For Next Two Games
SAN DIEGO (CBSNewYork/AP) — Yankees manager Joe Girardi is giving shortstop Derek Jeter two games off to rest his sore right leg.
Girardi says Jeter has been battling a calf injury. The manager doesn't know if the injury came about because of a strained right quadriceps that landed Jeter on the disabled list from July 12 until being activated last Sunday.
Says Girardi: "It's a concern of ours and we've got to try to get him healthy."
It appeared that Jeter took an awkward step while making a play in Friday night's 7-2 loss in San Diego. He also had an awkward slide into third base during the game.
Jeter broke his left ankle in the American League championship series in October and opened the 2013 season on the disabled list. When he came off the DL on July 28, he hit the first pitch he saw into the Yankee Stadium stands.
Eduardo Nunez started at shortstop on Saturday night against the Padres a night after starting at third base. Brett Lillibridge started at third base.
