Yankees' Levine: 'No Interest' In Paying Cano $300M
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- All-Star second baseman Robinson Cano reportedly hasn't budged from his asking price north of $300 million over 10 years.
The Yankees haven't altered their position either: not gonna happen -- at least not in the Bronx.
"We have no interest in paying any player over $300 million," team president Randy Levine said Tuesday, according to the New York Post.
Levine said the Yankees "made a very competitive offer" to Cano and are awaiting a counter-offer. Meanwhile, Cano's representatives at Roc Nation Sports and CAA Sports -- including rap mogul Jay Z -- discussed the free agent with Mets brass over dinner Monday, according to multiple reports.
It's hard to imagine the Mets spending that kind of money on a player, especially with general manager Sandy Alderson indicating that the team won't be doling out any nine-figure contracts.
The Yankees are willing to open the checkbook -- to a point -- for the homegrown Cano with an offer believed to be in the $160-million range over seven years. Levine was "highly skeptical" that any team would touch Cano's asking price of $300 million.
"We hope he comes back to us," Levine said. "We want him. But there are really no reasons to have any discussions at this point."
The 31-year-old Cano hit .314 with 27 home runs and 107 RBIs in 2013.
