Yankees Captain Derek Jeter: I'd Consider Playing Elsewhere
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- It's unfathomable to many: Derek Jeter in something other than pinstripes or Yankee road grays.
But in a recent interview, the future Hall of Famer said he'd consider playing elsewhere -- a la Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning -- if push came to shove.
"Well, if I wanted to keep playing, yes," Jeter told ESPN national columnist Rick Reilly when asked if he could see himself making a Manning-like change.
Jeter, leading all of baseball this season with 202 hits, has one year remaining on his three-year, $51-million deal, which includes a player option for 2014.
Negotiations turned testy at times after the 2010 season, during which Jeter hit just .270, his lowest average since a 15-game stint in 1995. At a press conference to announce the new deal, Jeter admitted he was "pretty angry about it, and I let that be known."
"It's a business," Jeter told Reilly. "People forget that."
As if the thought of Jeter in another uniform isn't strange enough, imagine the shortstop chasing 4,000 hits -- or Pete Rose's all-time record -- with another set of home fans cheering him on.
"No comment necessary," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told the New York Daily News.
