Yankees Activate Chamberlain, Trade For 3B McGehee
NEW YORK (WFAN/AP) — The Yankees may be sputtering, but some help is on the way.
Losers of eight of their last 11 heading into Tuesday night's tilt with Baltimore, the Bombers will have Joba Chamberlain available in the bullpen after he was activated from the disabled list earlier in the day, WFAN's Sweeny Murti reported.
The 26-year-old right-hander, who is coming off Tommy John surgery and a freak ankle injury, hasn't pitched in the big leagues since last June. However, Chamberlain had been clocked in the high-90s during his recent rehab outings and it was felt he was ready to rejoin the club, instead of pitching another rehab outing at Trenton, Murti reported.
The Yankees also bolstered their bench Tuesday, acquiring third baseman Casey McGehee from Pittsburgh for reliever Chad Qualls, a move that followed injuries to Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira.
McGehee, 29, is hitting .230 with eight homers and 35 RBIs.
The 33-year-old Qualls was acquired by the Yankees from Philadelphia on July 1 and made eight appearances.
Rodriguez is on the disabled list after breaking a bone in his hand when he was hit by a pitch last week. Meanwhile, Teixeira received a cortisone shot on Tuesday for a hand injury after leaving Monday night's game against Baltimore.
