WTC Health Registry Launches Third Health Survey To Study Effects Of 9/11 Dust Cloud
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- New York City is launching its third health survey to learn more about the effects of the toxic dust cloud from the September 11th terror attacks.

The World Trade Center Health Registry announced it will be conducting the survey of more than 70,000 people that were exposed to the dust during the attacks and its aftermath.

Dr. Mark Farfel, Director of the WTC Health Registry, told 1010 WINS on Wednesday that the survey was very important because it provided another significant measure of the health effects.
"We had surveyed all of our enrollees in '06-07, and we got information on the midterm health impacts, but this survey 10 years out, is very important for understanding the longer-term trends. And the course of the health conditions and symptoms that people have reported on earlier rounds," Farfel said.
The latest survey will also obtain information about the the most common health effects. New questions about mental health will also be asked about topics such as depression, anxiety and the history of traumatic stress before and after 9/11.
"One of the interesting elements of the survey in the registry findings is that we're not only finding both respiratory and mental health outcomes in rescue and recovery workers, but we're also seeing those outcomes in the other groups -- the residents, people who've worked in the area of Lower Manhattan at the time of 9/11," Farfel said.
