Wright To Pass Kranepool, Will It Be His Final Feat As A Met?
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Ed Kranepool played all 18 MLB seasons with the New York Mets. Kranepool retired after the 1979 season with 1,418 career hits as a Met.
At 29, David Wright equaled Kranepool's franchise record in last night's 10-6 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. It look Wright 598 less games to match Kranepool's feat, but the big question is whether he will be a one-franchise player like Kranepool.
Wright will have the opportunity to pass Kranepool and become the lone leader in Mets' all-time hits when he faces Pirates' starter Jeff Locke tonight at Citi Field.
It could be Wright's final major achievement as a Met. His future with the Mets appears murky considering the club holds a $16 million dollar club option for 2013.
While there is little doubt that the Mets will pick up his option, it is less clear whether Wright will come to an agreement on a long-term contract extension during the offseason.
Wright will turn 30 in December. The Mets' financial situation prevents them from building around him with high-priced free agents and they allowed Jose Reyes to join the Marlins last offseason. Would Wright want to tie himself a franchise that has little shown commitment toward building a winning ballclub?
He has refused to open contract talks during the season and is focused on what's happening on the playing field. Wright recently opened-up about his future in an interview with the New York Post. It's clear that Wright wants to play for a contending team, but will the Mets be able to convince him they're building the in the right direction to lock Wright into a long-term deal?
"You want to be able to win, and I've only experienced a little bit of that here," Wright told the Post. "In a perfect world, we get this thing turned around and going in the right direction and ultimately I get to experience the bad, the ugly and the good here, which includes winning."
Should contract negotiations stall, the Mets could opt to trade Wright for pieces to aid their rebuilding process.
Thursday's home finale could be Wright's final appearance at Citi Field in a Mets' uniform.
