New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Fire Commissioner Sal Cassano, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, Port Authority police superintendent Michael Fedorko, and 9/11 Memorial president Joe Daniels laid a wreath at the 9/11 Memorial on Tuesday to recognize first responders who gave their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.

"Ten years ago, the first responders were first in this battle,Everybody knew this was going to be the worst fire we ever responded to," Cassano said. "It [the memorial] reminds me of the courage and bravery and commitment and dedication shown that day."

Bagpipers, color guards, and honor guards joined in a ceremonial procession marking the first of seven first responder days to honor the 441 first responders whose names are inscribed in bronze on the memorial.
Juana Lomi was a paramedic at New York Downtown Hospital on 9/11 and she remembers rushing to ground zero and watching in horror as the towers came down.
"The sky was coming down on me," she said. "I didn't know what was going on, I thought it was the end of the world."
Tuesday was her first time at the reflecting pools. She said it was extremely touching to look at the names of fellow workers who perished on that tragic day.
