World Trade Center Sphere Remains In Battery Park After Moving Deadline Passes
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A deadline to remove the sphere that survived the 9/11 terror attacks from Battery Park has come and gone.

The World Trade Center sphere was supposed to be moved out by April 30 to make way for renovations but the iconic 25-foot bronze sculpture that was pulled from the rubble of the Twin Towers is still there.
It is now unclear where or when the sculpture will go.
The Port Authority told the New York Times they are exploring options for a temporary home for the Fritz Koenig sculpture.
Michael Burke, who lost his brother -- Fire Captain William Burke, is pushing ahead with his petition to have the sphere become part of the memorial plaza.
"I'm hoping the politician and bureaucrats can see the light and agree with everybody else and restore it where it belongs, back home," Burke.
However, the memorial foundation maintains there is no place for the sphere on the plaza in the grove of oak trees.
Initially, the sculpture stood between the Twin Towers as a symbol of world peace. It somehow survived the 9/11 terror attacks, and emerged from the rubble only with a large gash. After that it was moved to Battery Park, where it became a monument, and a symbol of strength and perseverance.
In the future, the sphere may take up residence in a park across the street but for now the fate of the sphere is in limbo.
