Worker Rescued From 8-Foot Deep Hole In Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A man was hospitalized Monday evening after being rescued from a narrow, 8-foot deep hole at a construction site in Brooklyn.
The 33-year-old man was in serious but stable condition after the incident, according to the FDNY. At around 2 p.m. he was up to his chest in the 3-foot-wide hole behind a building at 2407 E. 23rd St. in the Sheepshead Bay section of Brooklyn.
Permits were filed to convert the two-story building's first floor into a commercial space and extend the back, according to Buildings Department spokeswoman Kelly Magee. Records also show a complaint about Monday's incident, saying the victim was a worker.
Magee said the Department issued a stop work order in response to an earlier incident and has ordered the excavation site to be filled and properly secured. She said the Department issued violations for failure to provide protection at an excavation site, failure to safeguard persons or property, failure to file plans for excavation work, and failure to provide proper fencing at the job site.
A man who answered the construction company's phone said he believed it was a minor accident.
