Margo Reed, 53, has been charged with grand larceny, falsifying business records, and tax evasion for allegedly stealing overdue fines from the three branches of the Yonkers Public Library.
The Westchester County District Attorney's office says between 2004 and 2010, Reed -- who was responsible for collecting fines and other revenue -- pocketed nearly $164,000 and altered records to cover it up.
The tax evasion charge says Reed did not account for the money on her state tax return.
D.A. Janet DiFiore says that, in today's economy this kind of crime directly impacts children, students, and anyone who looks to the public library as a place of knowledge and enjoyment.
Reed is due back in court on August 24.
If convicted Reed could be sentenced to five to 15 years in prison.
Reed's lawyer, Lawrence Sykes, did not immediately return a call seeking comment Wednesday.
