Woodchuck Tests Positive For Rabies In Ossining
OSSINING, NY (CBS 2) -- Authorities in Westchester County say a woodchuck in Ossining has tested positive for rabies.
It was spotted near Morningside Drive sometime before last Saturday. Health officials say the woodchuck seemed unhealthy and was caught on July 1. Test results received Thursday confirmed it was rabid.
This is the latest positive rabies case in Westchester. Last month, officials said two raccoons in Larchmont, a stray cat in Yorktown Heights and a grey fox in Briarcliff Manor, all tested positive for rabies.
Experts warn if you see any animal acting strangely, keep your distance. If it bites you, make sure the authorities can find it to make sure it isn't diseased and you can get treatment before it's too late.
Anyone who believes they or their pets may have had contact with the woodchuck in Ossining is asked to get in touch with the Westchester County Department Of Health at 914-813-5000.
