Family Of 5 Jumps Three Stories To Escape Fire in Paterson
PATERSON, NJ (CBSNewYork/AP) - A fire heavily damaged a house in Paterson, New Jersey at around 3:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, forcing two men, a woman and two children to jump from a third-story window.
The five family members at 186 North Seventh Street were taken to St. Joseph's Hospital and one of the men is currently in serious condition. The house was severely damaged.
Dira Grullon was on the first floor when the fire broke out in the wee hours of the morning and said she saw one of the children.
"Jump, jump, jump, take them out, take them out, take them out," Grullon recalls hearing during the incident. "They all jumped. The woman jumped, the mother of the kids, and the father."
One of the children was caught by two firefighters waiting below.
In all, seven people were displaced by the fire. The American Red Cross is providing assistance.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.
