Woman Struck, Injured In Fort Lee, N.J. Hit-And-Run

FORT LEE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A woman was mowed down right in front of her home in Fort Lee, N.J. while getting out of her car Wednesday evening, and police said the driver just sped away.

As CBS 2's Tracee Carrasco reported, police were hunting Wednesday night for the hit-and-run driver who left the woman injured and hospitalized.

Police said the 36-year-old woman was across from her home on Slocum Way near Center Avenue in Fort Lee, just before she was hit at 6 p.m.

The impact of the crash was so strong that the door was pushed all the way back. The victim was thrown and trapped under a nearby car.

"She was located under the rear of another car," said Fort Lee police Chief Keith Bendul. "The fire department responded had to extricate her, and the ambulances responded to treat her, and she was transported to the trauma center at Hackensack University Medical Center."

The woman was so severely injured that the team of investigators who handle serious or potentially fatal traffic accidents were on scene. But as of Wednesday night, police had very little information to go on.

"The witness just described it as a black vehicle, and we're trying to locate any other witnesses," Bendul said.

Police were not sure Wednesday night how fast the driver was going, But Slocum Way is a one-way street with a speed limit of 25 miles per hour.

Many residents said drivers often fail to obey the speed limit.

"I don't think anyone drives less than 40," said neighbor Jennifer Carriel.

Carriel said the speeding in the neighborhood is such a problem that her car has been hit several times while parked on the street.

"One time, my fender was hanging – like, who did that?" she said. "And people just don't stop."

The woman's exact condition and the extent of her injuries was not known Wednesday night.
