Woman Stabbed Outside Mount Vernon Church In Front Of Choir, Children
MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Celebration turned to horror Wednesday night outside of a church in Mount Vernon after a woman was stabbed in front of children and choir members.
The attack happened outside the Greater Centennial A.M.E. Zion Church on Eighth Avenue around 9 p.m. as the choir left the building. The incident also happened in full view of children attending a day camp party.
It is unclear whether the victim was affiliated with either group.
According to the Journal News, a man -- dressed all in black -- stabbed the victim in the shoulder before fleeing the scene.
The woman was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx for treatment.
"It's a sad commentary on society when an innocent woman is assaulted outside her house of worship," Mount Vernon Mayor Clinton Young Jr. said in a statement. "The City and the church family will continue to pray for her speedy recovery."
The mayor added they are "doing everything possible to bring the perpetrator to justice."
The assailant is still on the loose.
