Woman Critically Injured After Jumping From Window During Bed-Stuy Fire
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A woman is in critical condition following a fire that forced her to jump from a window in her building in Brooklyn, officials said Monday.
As CBS2's Scott Rapoport reported, the anguished screams of Cipriana Lundy, 33, could be heard on footage captured on cell phone camera.
An FDNY spokesman said the fire broke out at about 12:13 p.m. in the hallway of 128 Lewis Ave. in Bedford-Stuyvesant.
"I seen smoke. I couldn't breathe. I was trapped in the hallway," building resident George Miller said.
Lundy was in a third-floor apartment and could smell the smoke. She knew she had to evacuate, but not before she made sure her two children escaped safely.
"All I saw was the smoke, and my mother came in the back room and kicked out the back window and lowered me and my brother down, and then jumped out the window," Cipriana's daughter Emani said.
Witnesses said Cipriana lowered Emani and Julianne, 3, into the arms of a waiting man standing on the scaffolding below.
"Somebody on the scaffold was making sure they was coming down good," Miller said.
When the children were safe Cipriana jumped out the window, fire officials said. She landed painfully one floor below on the scaffolding.
Cipriana was taken to Kings County Hospital with a broken leg. She was in stable condition.
Three firefighters were also treated at the scene for minor injuries. The fire was under control by 1 p.m., the FDNY said.
