90-Year-Old Woman Hit By Stray Bullets In The Streets Of East New York
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A 90-year-old woman was wounded by stray bullets Wednesday afternoon in East New York, Brooklyn.
As CBS 2's Dick Brennan reported, Gloria Johnson was reported in stable condition at Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center Wednesday night, after being shot at Blake and Miller avenues around 4:30 p.m.
The woman was walking to the laundromat with a shopping cart and her home health aide, when a silver car pulled up and someone inside opened fire at someone else, police said.
"By the time we went to the car, we see her bleeding from her arm. We were sad and worried about her, and we just called the ambulance for her," said Staf Ali, who ran to Johnson's aid.
Johnson was struck once in the elbow, but she was expected to recover fully. Her granddaughters were absolutely overjoyed at her progress in recovery Wednesday night.
"I grabbed her arm, and my cousin said when he saw her, she actually wanted to get up and go home," said Judeen Phillips, one of Johnson's granddaughters.
"She's strong. She's been through a lot, and we just need your prayers," said another granddaughter, Stacey Holt.
Johnson's children and grandchildren said she was an immigrant from Jamaica from many years ago. They said she loves to knit.
Police were still searching for the gunman late Wednesday night.
"Shame on you for busting shots at a 90-year-old lady," said John Rodriguez of the 75th Precinct Community Council. "Shame on you."
Police said Wednesday night that they are not sure whom the gunman was targeting.
