Grandmother, 73, Missing For More Than A Week From Coney Island
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police Wednesday evening were asking the public to help them find a 73-year-old grandmother who has not been seen since Tuesday of last week.
Crucita "Lucy" Alvarado -- known in her neighborhood as "Miss Lucy" -- was last seen around 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, at a Rite-Aid store the corner of West 31st Street and Mermaid Avenue, around the corner from her home in Coney Island, Brooklyn, police said.
As CBS 2's Tracee Carrasco reported, the woman's daughter, Ingrid Alvarado, was walking the streets of Coney Island Wednesday evening, clutching a poster with her mother's picture and posting fliers.
Since Crucita Alvarado vanished, her daughter has been plastering "missing" posters all over Brooklyn. The emotional week long search has intensified because Alvarado has Alzheimer's disease, and is extremely vulnerable.
"At this point, I don't even know if she even is aware of where she is; who she is," Ingrid Alvarado said. "There's a possibility she doesn't."
"When I got home from work, she wasn't here, so I waited a while, went upstairs, and once I saw that she didn't return, I kind of figured, 'Let me go look for her,'" Ingrid Alvarado said.
Alvarado is described as a Hispanic female standing 5 feet 2 inches tall and weighing 130 pounds, police said. She was last seen wearing an orange shirt, black sweat pants, a black and gray sweatshirt jacket, and black sneakers, police said.
In addition to Alzheimer's, Alvarado has diabetes, high blood pressure and is in need of her daily medications. Her family and friends are devastated by her disappearance.
"We all miss her. We're heartbroken. We can't sleep, eat," said Ingrid Alvarado said.
"I wonder where she would be with her condition it's a little hard, you know, but we're all praying for her," said Alvarado's friend Carmen Ramirez.
Alvarado's family said she was afraid of the subway but they have not ruled out the idea that she may have used public transportation to get somewhere.
The family plans to post missing posters in the other boroughs this week.
