Wolf Pups Arrive At Wolf Conservation Center In South Salem
SOUTH SALEM, NY (WCBS 880) - It's a boy and a girl! Two six-week-old wolf pups have arrived at the Wolf Conservation Center.
"Our little boy's name is Zephyr, which means light or west wind, and the little girl is named Alawa, which means sweetpea," says Maggie Howell, the center's managing director. "The boy is all black. His sister is a bit rounder, brown, kind of the classic grey wolf."
Howell explains eventually the pups will be used for educational purposes.
"What these wolves are responsible for is really inspiring our visitors to care more about the importance of their wild brothers and sisters," says Howell.

But, for now, they're just sleeping, eating, and hanging out with their nannies, one of which, as curator Rebecca Bose explains, is a German shepherd.
"He sort of acts as the go-between between the pups and then the humans," says Bose.

Both the humans and the animals are showering these pups with attention.
Howell says they are the first wolf pups they've had in nine years, so they're beyond excited.
"Any visitor that comes right now is going to get an opportunity to meet these guys," says Howell. "So, that's going to be a good time."
