With Wintry Weather & Snow On Its Way, Tri-State Residents Say 'It's Nuts'
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- You didn't think you'd have to get your shovels out in October, but it's time. Mother Nature is set to throw some winter weather our way this weekend.

Winter Weather Advisories and warnings are in effect from 8 a.m. Saturday to 4 a.m. Sunday for much of the Tri-State area.

Starting Saturday afternoon, a wintry mix is expected to hit the Tri-State Area and it will change over to wet snow. The extreme north and west suburbs are expected to get several inches.
So what's the bottom line?
AccuWeather says that accumulations will be a slush to an inch in New York City and on Long Island, where winds could be strong Saturday night. The potential snow in New York City would be the first to fall in the city before Halloween since 1952.
"The city can expect a slushy coating of up to an inch on lawns and car tops. The roads should mainly just be wet," AccuWeather's Dave Bowers said.
We could see 1 to 3 inches near the I-287 line and 3 to 6 inches north and west of the I-287 line.
Saturday night will be very cold with some snow early and then the skies will clear up late. Temperatures will also drop into the 30's.
Forecasters say motorists should expect slippery travel throughout Saturday and into Sunday morning. The New York City Office of Emergency Management has issued a Hazardous Travel Advisory for Saturday. NJ TRANSIT and the MTA have also advised customers to take extra care and caution when traveling.

In Mahopac, located in Putnam County, people are accustomed to getting a lot of snow, but folks are more than a little surprised they could be getting snow so early. Snow totals could be significantly higher in Putnam than other places in our viewing area.
"I don't even want to talk about the snow. I don't even want to talk. It's crazy that it's already snowing in October," Michelle Deegan told CBS 2's Scott Rapoport.
"We had frosting on our lawn today. It's nuts, can't believe it, it's October," said Diana Baker.

Forecasters also say some areas will see heavy, wet snow could stick to trees and power lines and may cause power outages.
"Hopefully no power outage," said Town of Carmel Highway Superintendent Mike Simone. "I don't see it being more than a 12-hour storm from what I'm understanding the backside, we're going to have sun out on Sunday."

The National Weather Service says parts of New Jersey could see 6 to 10 inches of snow starting at daybreak before tapering off by Saturday night. Forecasters are calling for four to eight inches of snow from the Hudson Valley to the Catskills.

In Croton Falls, Tom Sullivan rolled in to work with his truck coated with a thin layer of snow Friday morning from up the road in Dutchess County.
"We live up on top of a mountain. We get it and a mile down the hill, it won't have anything," he said. "My kids are excited. I don't care, it doesn't bother me. Winter's coming, it's going to snow. What are you going to do?"
And even if you don't live in one the areas expected to get snow, it is still going to be cold this weekend with temperatures 10 to 15 degrees cooler than we're used to seeing this time of year.
