Drivers Told To Take It Slow On Icy Roads
RIDGEWOOD, N.J. (CBS 2) -- New Jersey Transit was warning bus commuters Tuesday to give themselves extra time because of icy road conditions, Magee Hickey reports.
On the Garden State Parkway, reduced visibility because of the snow, coupled with icy patches made for slower going early.
Veteran NJ Transit bus driver John Kutcher had this advice for drivers: "I've been doing it a long time, so I've seen it all. Just take your time. Take your time because if you try to get there any sooner, you're better off being late than not getting there at all."
"That's the whole trick. Just take your time. You'll get there. You know, it might be another 10, 15 minutes maybe, but the people don't mind. They'd rather you get them there safe," he said.
One cab driver seconded that advice. "It's getting really slick now. It's getting bad," he said. "You just have to, you know, take it slow."
The strong winds, combined with the weight of ice and snow, may topple tree branches and powerlines as well.
If you don't have to drive, the train is a safer option, however riders should be careful on the platforms, due to the snow and ice.
