Bicyclist Killed In Hit-And-Run Crash In Williamsburg, Police Say

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police say a bicyclist was struck and killed in a hit-and-run crash in Brooklyn early Saturday morning.

According to police, the 35-year-old bicyclist was traveling eastbound in the bicycle lane on Grand Street in Williamsburg at around 2:30 a.m. when he was struck by a black Chevy Camaro sedan with tinted windows.

The vehicle did not remain at the scene, CBS2's Dave Carlin reported.

The victim, identified as Matthew Van Ohlen, was taken to Bellevue Hospital where he was later pronounced dead, police said.

The NYPD has been combing the area looking for evidence or surveillance images that could help lead them to the suspect, CBS2's Magdalena Doris reported.

Police said Van Ohlen was obeying traffic laws and was in the proper lanes at the time of the incident.

Residents in the area are shaking there heads at what happened," 1010 WINS' Roger Stern reported.

"Too many cars are going, cabs are driving -- everybody just don't care," one man said.

"I mean it's ridiculous. How do you leave a person there? How could you? It's a human being," Williamsburg resident Jack Clemente said.

Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS. Callers can remain anonymous.
