'Potential Problem' Found In Elevator That Crushed Brooklyn Man
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Investigators say they've uncovered a potential problem in some elevator units after a deadly accident in Brooklyn.
Or Oct. 2, Eran Modan, 37, was killed when he tried to escape an elevator in an upscale apartment on 156 Hope St. in Williamsburg, after it suddenly dropped nearly three feet. Modan tried to climb out through the open doors, but the elevator moved again and crushed him.
Investigators with the Buildings Department said that this type of elevator might have a deficiency and they want the owners to have them tested. In a statement released by Buildings Commissioner Rick Chandler, other buildings that may actively use the same elevator systems will also be investigated for safety compliance.
Investigators say the elevator units in question are not commonly used in New York City and represent a small portion of elevators currently in use.
