NYPD Traffic Enforcement Agent Faces Charges In Fatal Williamsburg Bridge Crash
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An off-duty NYPD traffic enforcement agent was arrested on multiple charges after police said a 21-year-old woman celebrating her birthday was killed in a crash on the Williamsburg Bridge.
Police said Amanda Miner of Brooklyn was riding in the back seat of a grey 2013 Infiniti sedan being driven by the off-duty traffic agent, identified as 26-year-old Stefan Hoyte, around 3:15 a.m. Thursday.
The car was heading eastbound on the bridge when police said it struck the median that divides the inner and outer roadways and then a support pillar, the impact ripping the car in two.
Miner was ejected from the back seat of the car, police said. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Hoyte and the front seat passengers, a 24-year-old man, were taken to Bellevue Hospital with minor injuries.
Miner's mother spoke briefly Thursday outside the family's home at the base of the bridge, 1010 WINS' Al Jones reported.
"All I know is that my baby's gone and yesterday we celebrated her 21st birthday and I'm not going to see her graduate from college," she said.
Miner was a junior at Lafayette College majoring in social work, Jones reported.
Hoyte faces vehicular manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, drunk driving and speeding charges, police said.
The Brooklyn-bound side of the bridge was closed as police investigated.
