Wife, Boyfriend Arraigned On Murder Charges In Death Of Peekskill Cabbie
PEEKSKILL, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – A Peekskill woman and her ex-con boyfriend were arraigned Tuesday on murder charges in the death of her cab driver husband last month.
Beatrice Camper, 60, and her boyfriend John Murray, 60, were remanded to the Westchester County Jail.
The two are accused of murdering Beatrice Camper's husband, Terry Camper, for his insurance money. A postal worker found the 53-year-old fatally shot inside his car on Oct. 3, prosecutors said.
In the months leading up to the murder, police said Beatrice Camper took out two insurance policies on her husband, listing herself as the beneficiary.
Beatrice Camper and Murray had been romantically involved for more than one year, police said. Their relationship began while he was in prison. Murray was released last year after serving more than 30 years for a Queens murder in the 1970s.
"The allegations in this indictment would be trite if they weren't tragic: An ongoing affair between a prison inmate and scheming wife, who together, conspired to kill her husband, collect the husband's life insurance money and move on with their lives," said District Attorney Janet DiFiore in a statement. "The tragedy now is that an innocent man was murdered and the defendants are facing the rest of their lives in prison."
Murray is charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon. Beatrice Camper is also charged with murder.
If convicted, Murray faces up to life in prison without parole. Camper faces a maximum of 25 years to life in prison.
The two are scheduled to be back in court on Dec. 18.
