Wide, Deep Sinkhole Opens In Middle Of Williamsburg Roadway
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Traffic was snagged in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Wednesday afternoon, after a sinkhole estimated at 6 feet deep opened up in the middle of Driggs Avenue.
The sinkhole opened up on Driggs Avenue just off Metropolitan Avenue in the Northside section of the neighborhood. The road was shut down at the scene, and the hole was attracting attention from crowds.
Biermann estimated the hole to be about 6 feet long, 4 feet wide, and 6 feet deep. There was no immediate word of the cause of the sinkhole, or how it would be repaired.
The Department of Environmental Protection said its crews found a break in an 18-inch sewer main where the sinkhole developed.
The street where the sinkhole was found is just one block west of the busy and fashionable thoroughfare of Bedford Avenue.
Driggs Avenue remained closed near the scene late Wednesday.
