White Plains Girl Scouts Team With Seniors To Make Activity Kits For The Homebound
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- The "Heart of the Hudson" Girl Scout troop is on a mission.
The White Plains scouts sold 3,000 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to buy lunch and art supplies for their visit to a senior center in Woodside, Queens.
Together, the scouts and seniors made gift bags for homebound senior citizens. Victoria McGuire came up with the idea to pay it forward.
"Seeing their face, how it lights up, it makes me feel proud that I'm doing something nice for someone else," she said.
The "Spring Into Life" activity kit featured a plant, jewelry kit, discussion cards and a journal.
It is all part of a 3-year project to earn the Gold Award badge, but Victoria's mother said the benefits are already obvious.
"In watching them grow throughout the years in their confidence level, they're really becoming young ladies and being able to give of themselves and that's been the biggest piece for them," Sherri Zabko McGuire said.
The whole experience turned into a caring and productive visit that made for a special day.
"It was great, it was the best for me," senior Margerita Barbosa said.
And the Girl Scouts got plenty out of the experience as well.
"When I graduate from high school and I go to college, I know that I'll be able to do just about anything," Victoria said.
